An Austrian man convicted of plotting a violent terrorist attack targeting Taylor Swift fans outside the singer’s 2024 Eras Tour concerts in Vienna apologized in court Thursday before receiving a 15-year prison sentence.
The 21-year-old suspect, identified only as Beran A. under Austrian privacy laws, told the court in Wiener Neustadt, “I would just like to say that I am sorry,” shortly before judges convicted him on multiple terrorism-related charges connected to the foiled attack plot.
Authorities said Beran A. planned to attack crowds gathered outside Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium using knives and homemade explosives during Swift’s scheduled August 2024 performances. Prosecutors alleged he had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, discussed bomb-making and weapons purchases with extremists, and attempted to illegally acquire firearms in the days leading up to the concerts.
Police searching his apartment on Aug. 7, 2024 — one day before the first concert — reportedly discovered bomb-making materials and chemical substances. The threat prompted Austrian officials to cancel all three Vienna shows, disappointing tens of thousands of fans who had traveled to the city for the performances.
The concerts were expected to draw massive crowds, with authorities estimating more than 200,000 fans could gather across the three-night run. Swift later said the cancellations left her with “a new sense of fear,” though she praised authorities for preventing what could have become a deadly mass-casualty attack.
“Having our Vienna shows canceled was devastating,” Swift wrote in a statement posted to Instagram two weeks later. “The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows.”
Beran A. stood trial alongside another 21-year-old Austrian suspect identified as Arda K. Prosecutors said the two men, along with a third suspect detained in Saudi Arabia and identified as Hasan E., were linked to broader Islamic State-inspired plots targeting locations in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan in 2024.
Only Beran A. faced charges directly tied to the Taylor Swift concert plot. However, both men were convicted of terrorism-related offenses, including participation in a terrorist organization and traveling for terrorist purposes. Austrian media reported that Arda K. received a 12-year prison sentence.
The court also found the pair guilty of contributing to attempted murder in connection with allegations that Hasan E. stabbed and wounded several security officers and a woman in Mecca in March 2024 before being arrested.
Defense attorney Anna Mair argued Beran A. was “not an ideological mastermind” and previously said her client considered the abandoned concert attack “the biggest mistake of his life.” Following the cancellations, devastated Swift fans — known as Swifties — gathered throughout Vienna for impromptu sing-alongs and friendship-bracelet exchanges in a show of solidarity after the terror scare.
