Former Florida gubernatorial candidate and ex-Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum has been arrested in Alabama on multiple drug-related charges, marking the latest legal setback for the once-prominent Democratic politician whose career unraveled after a series of highly publicized scandals.

According to Baldwin County, Alabama, jail records, Gillum, 46, was arrested by the Daphne Police Department on the night of July 2 following a traffic stop near U.S. Highway 98 and Walmart Drive in Daphne, just outside Mobile. Authorities charged him with felony possession of a controlled substance, second-degree possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was booked into the Baldwin County Jail and released the following day.

Police records obtained by People magazine allege officers found approximately three grams of methamphetamine, eight pre-rolled marijuana cigarettes, a bong, multiple smoking pipes, and other drug paraphernalia inside Gillum’s vehicle. Investigators have not publicly released additional details about the circumstances leading to the arrest, and the narrative portion of the police report remains redacted.

Gillum had not publicly commented on the arrest as of Tuesday, and no Alabama attorney had been identified as representing him.

Once Considered Florida’s Democratic Future

Gillum rose to national prominence after becoming one of Florida’s youngest elected officials, winning a seat on the Tallahassee City Commission in 2003 before serving as the city’s mayor beginning in 2014.

His political profile soared during the 2018 Florida gubernatorial election, when he unexpectedly captured the Democratic nomination and came within roughly 34,000 votes of defeating Republican Ron DeSantis in one of the closest governor’s races in state history.

Many Democrats viewed Gillum as a rising national figure, but his political future quickly deteriorated after a series of personal and legal controversies.

Previous Brushes with the Law and Public Scandals

Gillum’s first major public controversy came in March 2020, when Miami Beach police found him in a hotel room where another man had reportedly suffered a suspected drug overdose. Officers discovered suspected crystal methamphetamine in the room, although Gillum was never charged with any crime stemming from that incident.

Gillum denied using methamphetamine but later acknowledged struggling with alcohol abuse. He entered a rehabilitation program and, months later, publicly came out as bisexual during a television interview while discussing his recovery.

Federal prosecutors brought far more serious legal challenges in 2022, when Gillum and a longtime political adviser were indicted on allegations involving campaign fundraising and wire fraud. Prosecutors accused Gillum of improperly soliciting political donations and directing funds for personal benefit.

Following a lengthy federal trial in 2023, a jury acquitted Gillum of making false statements to the FBI, but deadlocked on the remaining counts, resulting in a mistrial. The U.S. Department of Justice later dismissed the unresolved charges, ending the prosecution without convictions.

Despite the legal victory, the highly publicized investigation dealt a lasting blow to Gillum’s political career.

Public Life Continued Outside Elected Office

Although he never returned to public office, Gillum remained active in political commentary and Democratic organizing. He became a co-host of the “Native Land Pod” political podcast, which earned an NAACP Image Award in 2025.

Just one day after being released from the Alabama jail, Gillum appeared at the ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans as part of a panel discussion on the 2026 midterm elections alongside elected officials and fellow podcast hosts. He did not publicly address his arrest during the event.

What’s Next for Andrew Gillum?

Gillum is expected to face the Alabama criminal charges in Baldwin County court, where prosecutors will determine how to proceed with the felony drug possession case and related misdemeanor counts. If convicted, the most serious charge could carry significant legal consequences under Alabama law.

The arrest also raises new questions about Gillum’s future public role. Once regarded as one of Florida’s brightest Democratic stars and a potential national political leader, he has spent much of the past six years attempting to rebuild his reputation following personal struggles, federal prosecution, and repeated public controversies.

Whether he continues his work in media and political advocacy—or mounts another effort to return to public life—may now depend largely on the outcome of his latest criminal case in Alabama.
