A targeted acid attack in Jersey City, New Jersey, left five women injured Monday evening after two suspects riding a moped reportedly threw sulfuric acid at them, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on June 15 near 105 Wilkinson Avenue in the city’s Greenville neighborhood. According to the Jersey City Police Department, the women were either gathered near or inside a vehicle when the suspects rode past and splashed them with what investigators believe was sulfuric acid.

All five victims were transported to local hospitals with injuries that included skin burns and peeling caused by the corrosive chemical. Officials said the women were in stable condition, though one victim reportedly required specialized treatment for more serious burns. Their injuries were said to be non-life threatening.

Investigators believe the attack was not random. Police say it appears to be connected to an earlier dispute involving a larger group of people, suggesting the victims may have been deliberately targeted. Authorities have not released details about the earlier altercation or identified the victims.

The search for those responsible remains ongoing. While reports indicate at least one juvenile has been taken into custody in connection with the case, investigators continue working to identify and locate all individuals involved.

Jersey City Mayor James Solomon condemned the violence and pledged full support for the investigation.

“My thoughts are with those hurt in this horrific attack, and I want our communities to know that violence like this has absolutely no place on our streets,” Solomon said, adding that police have been directed to use all available resources to bring those responsible to justice.

Sulfuric acid is a highly corrosive chemical commonly found in products such as car batteries, fertilizers, and industrial cleaners. Exposure can cause severe skin burns, eye damage, and other serious injuries.

Police continue to ask anyone with information about the attack to come forward as detectives work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the assault.
