A 17-year-old barrel racing competitor has been arrested and accused of stabbing three horses during a major equestrian event in Las Vegas, leaving the animals unable to continue competing and prompting a criminal investigation by authorities.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded shortly after 2 a.m. on May 30 to reports of an injured horse at the South Point Arena & Equestrian Center, where the 2026 National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA) Professional’s Choice Las Vegas Super Show was underway. Investigators determined that three horses had been intentionally wounded with a sharp object.
Detectives with the department’s Animal Cruelty Section identified a teenage female competitor who had access to the barn where the horses were housed. Authorities allege she used a knife to inflict multiple injuries before being located at a nearby hotel and taken into custody.
Police said the suspect, whose identity has not been released because she is a juvenile, was booked on 12 counts related to animal maiming and torture, along with three felony counts of malicious destruction of private property.
The injured horses received immediate veterinary treatment on-site. While officials said the wounds were not life-threatening and the horses are expected to recover, the injuries were serious enough to prevent them from continuing in the competition.
The NBHA described the incident as an isolated act involving the mistreatment of a limited number of horses and said the competitor was removed from the event. Organizers and the South Point venue emphasized that there is no ongoing threat and that the safety of participants and equine athletes remains a top priority.
Owners of the injured horses later shared details on social media, describing multiple stab wounds and the emotional impact of the attack on both the animals and their handlers.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help with veterinary expenses for all three of the injured horses.
