BALTIMORE, Md. — A Baltimore City man is facing an attempted murder charge following his arrest in connection with a June shooting that injured a 36-year-old man in the city’s Southwest District, according to the Baltimore Police Department.

Police announced on July 24 that detectives arrested Leonard Owens, 54, of Baltimore, without incident in connection with the June 20 shooting in the 300 block of North Gilmor Street. Following his arrest, Owens was transported to the Central Booking Intake Facility, where he was charged with attempted first-degree murder.

The investigation began at approximately 5:19 p.m. on June 20 after Southwest District officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert. When officers arrived, they found a 36-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg.

The victim was transported to a nearby hospital, where his injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening. During the initial investigation, officers detained a person of interest for questioning while detectives continued to gather evidence.

Authorities say the investigation ultimately led to Owens’ arrest more than a month later. The Baltimore Police Department has not released additional details regarding a possible motive or the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The case remains under investigation, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact Southwest District detectives or submit an anonymous tip through Metro Crime Stoppers.
