Maryland man charged with attempted murder after Trooper shoots knife-wielding suspect in Chester

A 21-year-old Queen Anne’s County man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he advanced on a Maryland State Trooper with a knife, prompting the officer to open fire during a disturbance call last week.

Preston Scott Carter, of Chester, Maryland, has been charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, reckless endangerment, and several related assault offenses, according to Maryland State Police. Prosecutors in Queen Anne’s County approved the charges following the April 16 incident.

Troopers were dispatched around 3:40 p.m. to Sherman Way in Chester after a 911 caller reported a man making threats while armed with a knife. When officers arrived and began speaking with the complainant, investigators say Carter suddenly approached a trooper while wielding the weapon.

The trooper fired her department-issued firearm, striking Carter. Authorities said medical aid was immediately rendered at the scene before he was flown by Maryland State Police Aviation Command to a nearby trauma center. No other injuries were reported.

After receiving treatment, Carter was released and taken into custody. He is currently being held without bond at the Queen Anne’s County Detention Center.

As is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, the trooper has been placed on administrative leave while the case is reviewed. The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is leading the investigation, with the Internal Affairs Unit conducting a parallel review.

Officials have not released additional details as the investigation remains active.
