Missing since June 6, Troopers rescue Golden Retriever ‘Chunk’ found swimming in Barnegat Bay

File this story in the “Life’s a Beach” section.  On June 21, New Jersey State Troopers Ryan Koehler and Vincent Ferdinandi, who work out of Point Pleasant, located a Golden Retriever that was reported missing from Brick, New Jersey, on June 6.

Two joggers recognized Chunk from posters and reported seeing him jump into the water near Mantoloking Bridge around 7 a.m. ~  WABC-TV

The Troopers were getting ready to start their shifts on Tuesday morning when they were dispatched to the report of a dog swimming in Barnegat Bay.  Koehler and Ferdinandi responded in a vessel and located Chunk, who was swimming in the area of the Mantoloking Bridge, and were able to bring him safely to shore.

We positioned our boat, got (the) line ready, acted as a leash,” Koehler said. “Line around dog and guide him up to the docks. ~ CBS News

Chunk, who is three years old, had been missing for more than two weeks. Needless to say, he was ecstatic to be reunited with his grateful owners.  Chunk’s owners, Jim and Marie Zangara, said that he had some matted fur and was covered in ticks, but was otherwise healthy, according to CBS News.
