A federal investigation is underway after a single-engine Piper Cherokee crashed in a wooded area near a residential neighborhood in Bowie, Maryland, killing all three people aboard.

The preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 20 , a single engine Piper Cherokee with a pilot and two passengers on board were en route from Ocean City, New Jersey to the Montgomery County Air Park, when for reasons unknown, the plane crashed into a wooded area in Bowie. There were no other injuries reported.

Maryland State Police identified the victims as pilot Yoav Bomrind, 26, of Israel, and passengers David Rabinovich, 19, of Israel, and Elad Naidik, 20, of Canada.

First responders launched a large search effort after an iPhone crash alert was received near the Route 50 and Route 301 corridor. The wreckage was discovered early Sunday morning in woods near a townhome community, where residents said the aircraft narrowly missed nearby homes.

Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are examining the pilot’s experience, flight path, fuel planning, weather conditions, maintenance records and communications data. Aviation experts noted that Bomrind had only recently earned his private pilot certification, while both passengers held student pilot licenses.

Officials have not determined the cause of the crash. The NTSB is expected to release a preliminary report within 30 days as investigators continue reviewing evidence from the fatal accident.
