(May 22, 2026) Kyle Busch, the hard-charging NASCAR superstar known to millions of fans as “Rowdy,” has died at the all too tender age of 41 following a sudden severe illness, NASCAR and Richard Childress Racing announced yesterday.

Busch, a two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and one of the most accomplished drivers in motorsports history, reportedly became unresponsive Wednesday while testing in a Chevrolet simulator in Concord, North Carolina, before being hospitalized in Charlotte. No official cause of death has been released.

In a joint statement issued by NASCAR, the Busch family and Richard Childress Racing, officials called Busch “a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation,” adding that the racing world had “lost a giant of the sport far too soon.”

The Las Vegas native built one of the most decorated careers NASCAR has ever seen, winning 234 races across the sport’s three national touring series — more than any other driver in history. His résumé included 63 Cup Series victories, 102 wins in the Xfinity Series and 69 Truck Series triumphs, both records.

Busch captured Cup championships in 2015 and 2019 while driving for Joe Gibbs Racing, cementing his reputation as one of the defining stars of his era. NASCAR later named him among its 75 Greatest Drivers.

Equally admired and controversial, Busch became one of racing’s most polarizing personalities during a career spanning more than two decades. Fans either passionately cheered or loudly booed the aggressive competitor whose fiery temper, rivalries and post-race confrontations became part of NASCAR lore. Yet his immense talent behind the wheel was rarely questioned.

Beyond his own driving career, Busch helped develop future NASCAR stars through Kyle Busch Motorsports, his championship-winning Truck Series organization that launched the careers of multiple Cup drivers.

Busch had recently battled illness, including a sinus-related issue during the May 10 race at Watkins Glen, where he requested medical assistance over team radio but still finished eighth. Just days before his death, he celebrated a Truck Series victory at Dover.

His final Cup Series appearance came in the NASCAR All-Star Race, where he finished 17th.

Tributes poured in from across the racing world after news of his death spread. Fellow Cup champion Brad Keselowski said he was in “absolute shock,” while longtime rival and former teammate Denny Hamlin wrote, “We love you KB.”

Busch is survived by his wife, Samantha, and their two children, Brexton and Lennix. The couple also co-founded the Bundle of Joy Foundation, which supports families undergoing fertility treatments.

NASCAR confirmed the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway will proceed as scheduled this weekend, with drivers and fans expected to honor Busch’s legacy throughout the event.

Rest in Peace Kyle Busch
