A North Florida man is facing multiple felony charges after deputies say he threw five newborn kittens into a trash can, leaving them to die.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the incident unfolded Saturday in Hawthorne when a witness reported hearing faint whining coming from a garbage can during a welfare check. Upon investigating, that Good Samaritan removed two plastic bags from the trash and discovered five kittens inside—still alive but in dire condition.

Authorities say the kittens were only a few hours old, with umbilical cords still attached. A neighbor’s surveillance video allegedly captured 36-year-old Tyler Holtz placing the bags into the trash can, providing key evidence in the case.

Animal control officials responded and confirmed the kittens were not thriving and that the mother cat could not be located. The person who found the animals rushed them for emergency care, but despite efforts to save them, four of the kittens later died. One surviving kitten remains under treatment at a veterinary office in Ocala.

Holtz was arrested and charged with five counts of animal cruelty for abandoning animals to die. He was booked into the Putnam County Jail and is being held on a $12,500 bond.
