Florida high school teacher arrested in grooming case involving student
An Okeechobee County high school teacher is facing felony charges after investigators say he groomed a student and maintained an inappropriate relationship that extended beyond the classroom—even while she was behind bars.
Laike Ikavis McNeil, 36, was arrested following a multi-week investigation launched March 2, when authorities discovered concerning communications between McNeil and an 18-year-old student who had been briefly incarcerated on an unrelated matter. The interaction came to light through monitored electronic visitation at the Okeechobee County Jail.
According to the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office, McNeil—who previously taught the student at Okeechobee High School—was observed communicating with her and providing financial support to her inmate account. Detectives later uncovered ongoing contact across multiple digital platforms, both during and after the student’s time in school.
Investigators, led by School Resource Unit Sgt. Christina Torres, executed search warrants for electronic devices and accounts, gathering technical data and communications that they say demonstrated a pattern consistent with grooming and an inappropriate personal relationship.
McNeil has been charged with authority figure engaging in a romantic relationship with a student and use of a two-way communications device to facilitate a felony. He was released on bond following his arrest.
School district officials said McNeil had already been reassigned to a role without student contact once the allegations surfaced, and his contract had been slated for non-renewal prior to his arrest. The district emphasized student safety remains its top priority as the investigation continues.
Authorities are asking anyone with additional information or who believes they may be a victim to contact the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office.
