A South Florida high school teacher is facing felony drug charges after authorities say fentanyl and cocaine were discovered inside his backpack in a classroom at Lely High School, located Naples, Florida.

According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, 44-year-old Christopher D. Toukonen was arrested Thursday after school administrators reported suspected narcotics use while he was alone inside the classroom with no students present.

School staff searched Toukonen’s backpack and allegedly found a mixture containing fentanyl and cocaine before contacting deputies. CCSO Youth Relations Bureau deputies and Vice and Narcotics detectives responded to the campus, interviewed Toukonen, and took him into custody.

Toukonen was booked into the Collier County jail on felony charges of possession of fentanyl and cocaine, along with possession of narcotic paraphernalia.

Sheriff Kevin Rambosk praised the rapid response by school officials and law enforcement.

“Thanks to the swift actions of school staff and our deputies and detectives, this situation was addressed immediately,” Rambosk said in a statement.

Investigators later executed search warrants on Toukonen’s classroom and vehicle parked on campus, but deputies said no additional narcotics were recovered. Authorities confirmed the investigation remains ongoing.

Following his arrest, Collier County Public Schools announced Toukonen was immediately removed from the classroom and that the district had begun the termination process.

In a statement, district officials said the alleged conduct “does not reflect the values or expectations” of the school system or its educators, adding that student safety and community trust are top priorities.

Lely High School Principal Jen Bledsoe also notified families of the arrest in a message emphasizing transparency and the district’s commitment to maintaining a safe learning environment for students.
