(April 26, 2026) A high-profile night celebrating press freedom turned chaotic Saturday when an armed suspect stormed a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner, prompting the evacuation of President Donald Trump, top U.S. officials and thousands of attendees.

The annual dinner—long a symbol of the often-tense but essential relationship between the presidency and the press—draws journalists, political leaders, celebrities and dignitaries from across the country. This year’s event at the Washington Hilton included Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Cabinet members, lawmakers and roughly 2,600 guests.

The incident unfolded shortly after 8:30 p.m., when witnesses reported hearing multiple loud bangs near the hotel’s lobby security area. Guests inside the ballroom dove under tables as Secret Service agents rushed the president and other officials to safety.

Authorities say the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, charged toward a magnetometer checkpoint armed with a shotgun, handgun and multiple knives. He allegedly opened fire, striking a Secret Service agent at close range. The agent was saved by a bulletproof vest and is expected to recover.

Law enforcement subdued the suspect within moments. Officials said he was not shot but taken into custody and transported to a hospital for evaluation.

Preliminary findings suggest Allen acted alone, though his motive remains under investigation. According to law enforcement sources, he indicated an intent to target Trump administration officials, but it remains unclear whether the president himself was the intended target. The FBI’s counterterrorism unit is leading the investigation, and a search warrant for the suspect’s California residence is pending.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said Allen faces federal charges including use of a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer, with additional charges possible. He is expected to appear in court on Monday.

In a late-night press conference, Trump praised law enforcement’s swift response and confirmed that all protected officials were unharmed. He described the presidency as “a dangerous profession” and said he initially mistook the gunfire for a dropped object before realizing the severity of the situation.

“This was an event dedicated to freedom of speech,” Trump said, noting that despite the violence, the moment briefly unified attendees across political lines.

The dinner was ultimately canceled after an initial attempt to continue, with organizers confirming it will be rescheduled within 30 days. WHCA President Weijia Jiang vowed, “We will do this again.”

The incident is expected to prompt renewed scrutiny of security protocols at the Washington Hilton, a venue that traditionally remains partially open during the event. Investigators are focusing on how the suspect was able to access the building with multiple weapons despite layered security measures.

Saturday’s scare marks the latest in a series of security threats involving the president in recent years and echoes past violence tied to the same venue, including the 1981 shooting of President Ronald Reagan outside the Hilton.
